Is China Leading the World in Self-Driving Cars?
Wuhan, a city in central China, has started the world’s biggest test of self-driving cars by taking advantage of its large urban area. Baidu, a big name in technology, runs a fleet of 500 robot cars, and they plan to double that number soon. Wuhan’s transportation system and large number of vehicles make it a great place to test this technology.
Chinese Advancement in Autonomous Vehicles
China is making rapid progress in the area of self-driving cars, much faster than any other country. Robot taxis are now in use in more than 16 places, and at least 19 automakers and suppliers are actively working on the project. The Chinese government backs this plan by setting up testing areas and monitoring how people feel about the technology’s safety through monitored online chats.
Safety Regulations and Public Perception
Other countries are more careful when it comes to autonomous technology, but Chinese people are more trusting, according to polls. People in the area, say that they are generally optimistic about car safety because of government approvals. On the global front, however, there are random events and more strict rules that make it harder for companies like Cruise and Waymo to do business in the USA.
Data Control and International Relations
China has strict laws that keep locally collected research inside of China’s borders. This makes it harder for foreign cars to use Chinese innovations in other countries. International cyber-security worries are also raised by this separation of data, as possible limits on sending automotive data to China loom. Studies on Future Trends and Global Impact Projection say that by 2030, 20% of the cars sold in China could be self-driving, and another 70% could have advanced systems that help the driver. The push for electric cars makes these self-driving systems work better because electric motors run more smoothly. At the same time, Chinese companies keep coming up with new ideas by incorporating and improving Western technologies. This helps them become the winners in both the electric vehicle and self-driving car markets.
