A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC) and Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC) to market, run and operate the Golden Chariot train. The MoU is an important step towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to promote tourism in India as well as his clarion call to countrymen to visit at least 15 tourism spots in India.

Key Highlights of MoU

KSTDC will soon hand over the reins of Golden Chariot train to IRCTC, the tourism arm of Indian Railways. IRCTC is expected to carry out an internal refurbishment of the train and commence operations from March 2020.

IRCTC is also planning a revamp of train itineraries so as to add different flavours that Karnataka has to offer.  The Golden Chariot now covers tourist destinations in Karnataka, Kerala, Puducherry and other south Indian states. The new itineraries shall be a mix of history, culture, wildlife and nature and proposed places to be included in the itinerary include- Bandipur, Hampi, Mysore, Halebid, Chikmagalur, Goa and Bijapur.

IRCTC and KSDTC are also expected to keep the price of the tickets competitive so that the common people can also avail the facility of this train. This step will also boost the tourism in Southern India.

About The Golden Chariot Train

It is a Government of Karnataka initiative in a joint venture with the Union Ministry of Railways. Government of Karnataka and KSTDC have been operating and maintaining Golden Chariot since it commenced its operations in 2008. The 18 coach long train has 44 guest rooms with a capacity of 84 guests. It covers tourist attractions in the state of Karnataka and other south Indian states.

Golden Chariot is South India’s first and only luxury train but its services were, however, suspended by Karnataka government temporarily on account of huge losses.
