IOC suspends Indian membership

International Olympic Committee (IOC) has suspended India’s membership from Olympics. IOC has taken this strict step to stop tainted individual from contesting for top positions of Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

What is the issue?

IOC wants that election for top posts of IOA should be held as per Olympic Charter, which insists that organizing committees for each country remain autonomous and free of government influence. India’s national sports code does not adhere to these requirements, and consequently, a New Delhi court ordered the IOA to hold an election as per government’s sports code instead of adhering to the IOC’s charter.
IOC is against the election of candidates tainted with corruption charges. Individuals like Lalit Bhanot (who was jailed on corruption charges), Abhey Singh Chautala (contesting for president post) is a close ally of former IOA president Suresh Kalmadi are contesting for these positions. Recently, Randhir Singh, incumbent secretary general, calling the elections unfair, withdrew his name from the elections.
