IOC Produces Specialized ‘Reference’ Petrol and Diesel for Vehicle Testing
The Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has achieved a significant milestone by producing specialized “reference” petrol and diesel for the first time in India. These fuels, designed to have higher specifications, are crucial for calibrating and testing vehicles by automobile manufacturers and testing agencies such as the International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT) and the Automotive Research Association of India.
Addressing Import Reliance
For decades, India had relied on imports to meet the demand for these specialized fuels. However, IOC has now successfully developed indigenous products that will replace imports, ensuring a consistent and cost-effective supply for vehicle manufacturers and testing agencies.
The Importance of Reference Fuels
Reference fuels used for vehicle testing must meet higher-grade specifications compared to regular or premium petrol and diesel available at fuel stations. These specifications include the Cetane number, flash point, viscosity, sulfur and water content, hydrogen purity, and acid number, all of which are governed by government regulations. Such fuels are essential for emission testing of vehicles equipped with spark ignition engines.
Promoting Self-Reliance
IOC’s initiative aligns with the government’s goal of achieving self-reliance (Aatmanirbhar) and reducing dependency on imports. By producing reference fuels domestically, India can ensure a reliable and cost-efficient supply, fostering the growth of its automotive industry and testing facilities.
