Investment Boost for Assam’s Inland Waterways Sector

The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, recently announced investment of over ₹4,800 crore for the development of Assam’s inland waterways. This announcement was made during the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit in Guwahati. The investment aims to enhance the state’s waterways, particularly the Brahmaputra and Barak rivers, to facilitate trade, commerce, and tourism. This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed Bharat, focusing on sustainable and efficient transport solutions.

Significance of Inland Waterways

Inland waterways are crucial for economic growth. They offer a cost-effective and environmentally friendly mode of transport. The revival of Assam’s waterways, neglected in the past, is expected to boost trade and tourism. The Brahmaputra and Barak rivers provide a rich network for cargo and passenger movement.

Government Initiatives

The government has launched several schemes to promote the use of inland waterways. The ‘Jalvahak‘ scheme incentivises businesses to shift to this mode of transport. This transition aims to reduce congestion on roads and railways. The ‘Harit Nauka’ scheme plans to convert conventional vessels into green vessels by 2030.

Investment Breakdown

The investment includes allocations for various projects. ₹1,500 crore will facilitate cruise tourism and enhance cargo handling by 2027-28. Key infrastructure developments include new jetties and terminals. A ₹375 crore is earmarked for expanding ship repair facilities in Pandu. Additionally, ₹191 crore is allocated for maintaining fairway depth through dredging.

Technological Advancements

The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) is implementing projects worth ₹1,010 crore. This includes the construction of new terminals and a ship repair facility. The government is also investing in electric catamarans and a water metro service in Guwahati and Dhubri, inspired by the success of Kochi Metro.

Future Prospects

The development of riverine tourism is a key focus. The government aims to create a conducive ecosystem for smooth operations. This includes building lighthouses and improving navigational aids. The initiatives are expected to position Assam as a hub for inland water transport.
