International Monitoring Station (IMS) Day 2023

The commemoration of International Monitoring Station (IMS) Day on December 19, 2023, is a testament to the relentless efforts and unwavering commitment of personnel dedicated to ensuring interference-free spectrum for public telecom services and wireless users in India. This milestone celebration is led by the Wireless Planning & Coordination Wing (WPC) and the Wireless Monitoring Organisation (WMO).

About Wireless Planning & Coordination Wing (WPC)

The WPC, operating within the Ministry of Communications, Government of India, is responsible for spectrum engineering and management. It issues licenses, formulates national frequency allocation plans, collaborates with national and international organizations to enhance spectrum policies, and oversees the effective utilization of radio frequency spectrum across the country.

History and Significance

The WMO, established in 1952, serves as the vigilant eye and ear of the WPC, playing a crucial role in spectrum monitoring, measurements, and inspection duties for efficient radio frequency spectrum management and Geo-Stationary Orbit. This celebration acknowledges the historical journey of wireless monitoring and spectrum management in India.

Strategic Network of Monitoring Stations

The WMO’s network includes one International Satellite Monitoring Earth Station (ISMES), five International Monitoring Stations (IMSs), and 22 Wireless Monitoring Stations (WMSs), strategically located across the country. This network ensures comprehensive monitoring capabilities for interference-free radio-communication services.

Operational Achievements

The WMO has been instrumental in crucial projects, such as its contributions during the G20 Summit in Delhi, conducting field studies on spectrum evaluation, and addressing interference problems. These accomplishments underscore its pivotal role in maintaining a seamless wireless environment amid evolving technology.

Future Plans and Advancements

Looking ahead, the WMO has ambitious plans for a state-of-the-art training center and a new hostel facility to further augment its monitoring station capabilities. These initiatives reflect a commitment to excellence, continued technological advancements, and a dedication to the rich history of monitoring.
