International Fleet Review 2025 and Exercise Komodo 2025

The International Fleet Review (IFR) 2025 is currently taking place in Bali, Indonesia. This event runs from 15 to 22 February 2025. The Indian Navy is represented by the INS Shardul and the Long Range Maritime Surveillance P8I aircraft. The exercise is hosted by Indonesia and involves naval forces from various nations, including the US, Russia, and Australia.

The 5th Multilateral Naval Exercise Komodo features 38 countries and 19 foreign warships. This includes notable vessels such as the USS Dewey from the US Navy and ships from the Russian Pacific Fleet. The participation of both US and Russian naval forces signifies a rare instance of collaboration between these traditionally opposing powers.

Themes and Goals of Komodo 2025

The theme for Komodo 2025 is Maritime Partnership for Peace and Stability. This reflects a commitment to collective security and cooperation in maritime operations. The exercise also includes forums for naval officers to share experiences and ideas, culminating in the International Symposium on Maritime Security.

Historical Context of the Exercise

Komodo exercises have been conducted biennially since 2014, with interruptions in 2020 and 2022. The rationale for these exercises stems from Indonesia’s historical experiences with natural disasters, particularly the 2004 tsunami. Such exercises aim to enhance international collaboration in humanitarian assistance and disaster response.
