International Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members

Annually, on 25th March the International Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members is observed by the United Nations. This day is observed to commemorate Alec Collett’s abduction anniversary.

Overview:

  • Alec Collett was a journalist who was abducted along with his driver in 1985 while working for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
  • In 2009, his body was found in Bekaa Valley, Lebanon.

The objective of this day

This day is observed by the UN with the aim of demanding justice, mobilizing action, and strengthening the resolve to protect the peacekeepers and personnel of the UN, as well as people who are working in the non-governmental sector and people who are associated with the press.

About UNWRA

UNWRA is the acronym for United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East. It is a United Nations agency that was established in 1949 to provide relief to all refugees of the 1948 Palestine conflict. It also helps in supporting the human development of Palestinian refugees. The mandate of this organization surrounds the displaced Palestinians due to the Palestine War in 1948 and other subsequent conflicts. With the UNWRA over 5.6 million Palestinians have registered as refugees. It looks to help all the Palestine refugees in Lebanon, Jordan, East Jerusalem, Syria, and the Gaza Strip.
