International Day of Mine Awareness 2022
On the 4th of April annually, the International Day for Mine Awareness is observed to increase attention among people across the world regarding generating awareness about landmines, assistance for mine action work, the threats that are faced by humans from them, and the work done towards their eradication.
Overview:
- This day is being organized by the United Nations-supported platforms and various activities are being carried out so that the threat posed by explosives and mines can be reduced.
- The mine action community worldwide which is headed by the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), has launched some activities a week in advance.
The theme for this year
“Safe Ground, Safe Steps, Safe Home” is the theme for this year’s International Day for Mine Awareness. Under this theme, more focus will be given by the United Nations Mine Action on the global mine action community’s remarkable achievements. “Safe Ground”, concentrates on clearing the planet of explosives and landmines so that it can be made safe for the purpose of development. “Safe Steps” highlights the fear of all those people staying in places laden with landmines and explosives who move about not knowing if an explosive will be detonated causing injury or death. “Safe Home” will be looking to restore the communities and the individual’s personal security in post-conflict settings.
History of this day
In 2005, the United Nations General Assembly approved the decision to celebrate this day on the 4th of April was declared. This day called for the promotion of the growth of capacities related to national mine-action in all the places where explosives and mines act as a threat to the lives of the people. For the last 20 years, UNMAS has been working toward the needs of the affected individuals and the hazards that are encountered by humans due to explosives and mines.
Significance of this day
This day is observed with the aim of freeing the planet from the dangers of explosives and landmines.
