International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illegal Trafficking

The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illegal Trafficking is observed on June 26, 2022 every year.

Aim of the day

  • The day is observed with the aim of spreading awareness regarding physical and psychological impact of drug overdose deaths, substance abuse and drugs-related problems worldwide.
  • Drug abuse is one of the biggest threats to health and society.
  • According to United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes (UNODC), this day will help in addressing the issue of transnational drug challenges.

Theme of the day

The International day against drug abuse and illegal trafficking 2022 was observed under the theme- “Addressing drug challenges in health and humanitarian crisis.” This theme addresses different challenges faced by world.

History of the day

On December 7, 1987, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) had decided to observe June 26 as “International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking”. The main objective of observing this day was to take action against goal of creating a society which is free of drug abuse.

Significance of the day

The day is observed to spread awareness regarding harmful impact of drug abuse. The day seeks to instil a sense of responsibility among youth, so that they do not fall prey to drugs. On this day, several events are organised in schools and colleges, for educating students about the dangers of drug abuse.

UNODC campaign

For the World Drug Day, UNODC started the “#CareInCrises” campaign in 2022.

United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC)

UNODC is a United Nations office, established in 1997. It was established as the Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention by merging United Nations International Drug Control Program (UNDCP) and Crime Prevention & Criminal Justice Division at Vienna. In 2002, it was renamed in its present form.
