INSV Tarini team awarded Nari Shakti Puraskar 2017

India’s Navy all six women crew of INSV Tarini who completed India’s first all-women circumnavigation expedition of the globe was conferred prestigious Nari Shakti Puraskar 2017. The crew included Lt Commander Vartika Joshi, Lt Commander Swathi Patarpalli, Lt Commander Pratibha Jamwal, Lt Aishwarya Bodapatti, Lt SH Vijaya Devi and Lt Payal Gupta. These six women were among recipients of Nari Shakti Puraskar 2017 who were presented with award by President Ram Nath Kovind on occasion of International Women’s Day (March 8). However, the award was not be presented to them, as they were sailing then.

Navika Sagar Parikrama

The six women crew of INSV Tarini undertook task of circumnavigating globe, as part Indian navy’s Navika Sagar Parikrama expedition. It was first ever circumnavigation of globe by all-women Indian crew. It was aimed to demonstrate thrust of India’s Nari Shakti or women power on global platform.
The six-member crew was led by Lieutenant Commander Vartika Joshi. The expedition lasted for 254 days, which included 199 days at sea, covering a total of 21600 nautical miles. It was extremely challenging expedition as they encountered rough seas, high stormy conditions and severely cold temperatures.
Besides, circumnavigating the globe, the crew also collected and updated meteorological, ocean and wave data on regular basis for accurate weather forecast by Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). It also reported marine pollution on high seas. The women crew during port halts, also interacted with local populace, especially children to promote ocean sailing and spirit of adventure.

Nari Shakti award

The award aims to acknowledge achievement of women by bestowing awards on eminent women and institutions in recognition of their service towards the cause of women empowerment. It was established in 1991 and since then it is conferred annually by President on occasion of International Women’s Day on March 8 every year. It carries cash award of Rs. 1 lakh and certificate for individuals and institutions. The Ministry of Women and Child Development announces this national level award for eminent women, organisations and institutions.
