INS Vagir Commissioned into Navy

The Indian Naval Ship Vagir is a Kalvari-class submarine. It was manufactured by the MDL of Mumbai. The diesel-electric attack submarine was recently commissioned into the Indian Navy. The Indian Navy placed an order for the submarine in 2005. The submarine is named after a Vela Class submarine (diesel driven). The Vela class Vagir submarine operated between 1973 and 2001. Vagir is a sandfish. The INS Vagir diesel-electric submarine was completely made in India and is seen as a step in making India self-reliant in the defense sector. It will also help the Indian Government achieve its defense exports target of Rs 25,000 crores by 2025. The INS Vagir is the fifth Scorpene class submarine.

Scorpene Class submarine

Is INS Vagir a Kalvari class or Scorpene class? Kalvari is the Indian name for Scorpene. Scorpene submarines were first developed by the French Naval Group. There are three different types of scorpene class submarines namely diesel-electric submarines, coastal submarines, and air-independent propulsion submarines. The air-independent scorpene class submarines are the most advanced of all the three. In this type, the engine uses ethanol and oxygen as fuel. These submarines are highly expensive as they can stay underwater for more than 21 days.

INS Vagir – Fifth Scorpene-Class

India launched Project 75 to construct six scorpene class submarines. Four have already been commissioned. They are as follows:

  • INS Kalvari
  • INS Khanderi
  • INS Karanj
  • INS Vela

The INS Vagir was just delivered and INS Vagsheer is to be delivered soon.

Future Plans

All six submarines will be fitted with the Air Independent Propulsion system when the submarines come for an upgrade in 2025.
