INS Surat Tests MRSAM
The Indian Navy’s guided missile destroyer INS Surat has made advancement in India’s defence capabilities. On April 24, 2025, it successfully executed a precision cooperative engagement against a sea-skimming target in the Arabian Sea. This test involved the Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM), which is designed to neutralise various aerial threats.
About MRSAM
The MRSAM is a high-response missile system with a range of approximately 70 km. It employs dual guidance systems, which include command and active radar seeker technologies. The missile is capable of intercepting missiles, aircraft, guided bombs, and helicopters. Its features include a dual pulse solid motor and a proximity fuse for the warhead, ensuring effective engagement of targets.
Significance of the Test
The successful test of the MRSAM by INS Surat marks a milestone in India’s naval capabilities. It marks the country’s progress in indigenous warship design and development. This achievement puts stress on India’s growing prowess in military technology.
Context of the Test
The timing of the missile test coincided with heightened tensions following the Pahalgam terror attack. The Government of India has attributed this violence to cross-border terrorism.
International Relations and Defence
The missile test occurred shortly after Pakistan issued a maritime warning regarding its own missile test in the Arabian Sea. This incident reflects ongoing military signalling between the two nations. Indian defence and intelligence agencies are closely monitoring developments in the region, indicating heightened vigilance.
Commitment to Aatmanirbhar Bharat
The Indian Navy’s achievement with INS Surat is a testament to the broader initiative of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, or self-reliant India. This initiative aims to enhance domestic manufacturing capabilities in defence and other sectors. The successful test reinforces the importance of indigenous technology in strengthening national security.
