INS Kirpan

In a historic move, India has embarked on a significant journey by gifting its in-service missile corvette, INS Kirpan, to Vietnam. This marks the first time that India has bestowed a fully operational corvette upon a ‘Friendly Foreign Country.’ The transfer of INS Kirpan aligns with India’s visions of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (the world is one family) and ‘Security and Growth for all in the Region (SAGAR).’

A Symbol of Friendship and Strength

The gifting of INS Kirpan carries immense significance. As India’s first fully operational corvette gifted to another country, it represents a testament to the strong friendship and trust between India and Vietnam. This gesture strengthens the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership established in September 2016 and fosters closer defense ties between the two nations.

INS Kirpan: A Khukri Class Missile Corvette

INS Kirpan is a formidable missile corvette belonging to the indigenously built Khukri class. Currently serving in the Indian Navy, this vessel is equipped with advanced weapons and sensors. Its participation in various operational and humanitarian assistance missions exemplifies its capabilities and reliability.

A Farewell and Transfer

The Eastern Naval Command (ENC) bid a ceremonial farewell to INS Kirpan at the Naval Dockyard. After its arrival, INS Kirpan will be received by the Vietnam People’s Navy, further strengthening naval capabilities and cooperation in the region.

Towards a Visionary Defense Partnership

The joint vision statement signed by the Defence Ministers of India and Vietnam in June 2022, titled ‘Joint Vision Statement on India – Vietnam Defence Partnership towards 2030,’ reflects the shared commitment to deepening defense collaboration and setting strategic goals for future cooperation. The gifting of INS Kirpan aligns with this vision and enhances the defense capabilities of Vietnam.
