Indo – Thai CORPAT

The Indo – Thai CORPAT exercise is a naval exercise conducted between the Indian Navy and the Thai Navy. Indo – Thai CORPAT means India – Thailand Coordinated Patrol.

What is Indo – Thai CORPAT?

The Indo – Thai CORPA is being conducted along the International Maritime Boundary Line since 2005. The maritime boundary is the division of earth water surface area. In Novmeber 2021, the 32nd edition of the Indo – Thai CORPAT was held.

Why is Indo – Thai CORPAT held?

The exercise is held to keep the Indian Ocean safe and secure for international trade and commercial shipping. The countries aim to implement the United Nations Conventions on Laws of the Sea (UNCLOS) through the exercise. The UNCLOS specifies regulations related to conservation marine environment, marine natural resources, drug trafficking, unregulated fishing, illegal immigration, exchange of information and conduct of search and rescue operation at sea.

How is Indo – CORPAT related to SAGAR vision of India?

India launched SAGAR in 2015. SAGAR is Security and Growth for All in the Region. Through this initiative India seeks to deepen its security and economic cooperation with its maritime neighbours. In order to achieve this, India will cooperate on coastal surveillance, exchange of information, build infrastructure. Thus, the Indo – CORPAT is in line with SAGAR vision.
