World Malaria Report 2024

India has achieved progress in combating malaria, as reported in the latest World Malaria Report by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The country has seen a remarkable decrease in malaria cases and deaths from 2017 to 2023. This achievement has positioned India to exit the High Burden to High Impact (HBHI) group in 2024.

Reduction in Malaria Cases

Malaria cases in India dropped from 6.4 million in 2017 to 2 million in 2023, representing a 69% reduction in cases. The decline is attributed to improved prevention and treatment strategies across the nation.

Deaths attributed to malaria in India fell from 11,100 to 3,500 during the same period. This 68% decrease marks the effectiveness of health interventions and public awareness campaigns.

Global Malaria Situation

Globally, malaria continues to pose threat. In 2023, there were an estimated 263 million cases and 597,000 deaths worldwide. A staggering 95% of these deaths occurred in Africa, where access to prevention and treatment remains limited.

Southeast Asia Progress

Southeast Asia has seen an 82% decrease in malaria cases from 2000 to 2023. India accounts for half of the region’s cases. Countries like Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Nepal have also reported reductions, while Myanmar and Thailand experienced increases.

Global Prevention Efforts

Between 2000 and 2023, global malaria prevention efforts averted 2.2 billion cases and 12.7 million deaths. WHO has certified 44 countries and one territory as malaria-free, with many more approaching this goal.

Despite progress, challenges remain, including climate change, which may increase malaria risks. WHO officials emphasise the need for political commitment, enhanced health systems, improved surveillance, and community involvement to sustain progress and strive for a malaria-free future.
