India’s golden girl Mary Kom gets another gold
Boxer Mary Kom has won her first major goal of the ongoing Asian games at Incheon. She has become the first Indian woman boxer to win a gold at Asian games. The five-time world champion Mary had raced her way ahead till the finals in which she defeated Kazakhtan’s Zhaina Shekerbekova. The game was in the 51-kg category. Mary Kom-a name which not many Indians knew of till recently had shot to fame after her Olympic bronze. It opened the doors of media to her and very soon there was a Bollywood movie devoted to her life in which the lead character was played by Priyanka Chopra.
Mary Kom did not have very smooth life conditions since her childhood at the family front. Also, there were not many takers for her passion of boxing. It was quite an uphill task for her to convince her family to believe in her and have faith in her abilities. She has been now blessed with a very understanding husband and three lovely kids. Her fans also call her ‘Magnificient Mary’ who have flooded her social media profiles with congratulations.
Sports statistician Mohandas Menon pointed out that it was the “15th GOLD for Mary Kom in her international boxing career since her first in the World Amateur Boxing Championships at Antalya, Turkey in 2002”.
She has been and will be a great inspiration for the women of India who find it hard to change the basic stereotypes about women and lack courage to follow their dreams.
