India’s First Green Certified Zoo in Himachal Pradesh
The Durgesh Aranya Zoological Park is set to be an important development in India. Located in Bankhandi, Kangra district, it will be the first zoo in India to gain certification from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). This certification marks the park’s commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly practices. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced this on November 2, 2024.
Significance of IGBC Certification
The IGBC certification is a mark of excellence in environmental standards. It focuses on both building and landscape certifications. This means that the zoo will not only be designed sustainably but will also maintain ecological balance in its surroundings. The certification process ensures that the park meets high standards in energy efficiency, water conservation, and waste management.
Focus on Sustainability
Sustainability is a key theme of the Durgesh Aranya project. The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of integrating sustainability into tourism and infrastructure. This approach aims to minimize environmental impact while promoting biodiversity. The zoo will serve as an educational platform, raising awareness about wildlife conservation.
Project Details
The first phase of the zoological park will span 25 hectares. The estimated cost for this phase is ₹230 crore. The project is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2025. The total budget for the entire project is ₹619 crore. This investment aims to position the park as a major tourist attraction in Kangra and surrounding districts.
Tourism and Economic Impact
Durgesh Aranya is designed to boost the tourism sector in the region. By attracting visitors, the park will generate revenue and create job opportunities. It will also promote local culture and heritage. The Chief Minister believes that the zoo will become a cornerstone for sustainable tourism development in Kangra.
Conservation and Innovation
The zoo will blend conservation with innovation. It will house various species, providing a safe environment for them. The design will incorporate natural habitats, ensuring that animals live in conditions similar to their wild counterparts. This approach enhances the visitor experience while prioritizing animal welfare.
Future Prospects
Once completed, Durgesh Aranya Zoological Park will set a benchmark for future projects in India. It will demonstrate how infrastructure can be developed without compromising the environment. The success of this park could inspire similar initiatives across the country, promoting a culture of sustainability.
Community involvement is crucial for the success of the park. Residents will be encouraged to participate in various activities, such as educational programs and conservation efforts. This engagement will encourage a sense of ownership and responsibility towards the environment.
Durgesh Aranya Zoological Park represents a forward-thinking approach to wildlife conservation and tourism. With its focus on sustainability and community involvement, it aims to create a positive impact on both the environment and the local economy.
