Masali: India’s First Border Solar Village Established

Masali village, located in Suigam taluka of Banaskantha, has recently achieved the distinction of being India’s first solar-powered border village. Situated approximately 40 kilometres from the Pakistan border, it is home to around 800 residents, which is part of a broader Border Development Project aimed at transforming 17 villages into solar-powered communities.

Project Overview

The solar project in Masali village is valued at Rs 1.16 crore. The initiative was executed with support from the Revenue Department, Uttar Gujarat Vij Company Limited (UGVCL), local banks, and solar energy companies.

Funding Sources

The project received a subsidy of Rs 59.81 lakh under the PM Suryaghar Yojana. Additionally, public contributions totalled Rs 20.52 lakh, while corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds contributed Rs 35.67 lakh.

Energy Capacity and Impact

The village is now equipped with 225.5 kilowatts of electricity, distributed across 119 homes. This capacity exceeds the energy requirements of all households, effectively resolving longstanding electricity issues.

Villagers have expressed satisfaction with the transition to solar energy. Sarpanch Magniram Rawal noted that residents are no longer burdened by electricity bills, marking improvement in their quality of life.

Significance of the Project

The completion of this project is a source of pride for the local administration. Banaskantha District Collector Mihir Patel brought into light that Masali is not only the first solar village in a border area but also the second solar village in Gujarat, following Modhera. This achievement puts stress on the potential for renewable energy solutions in remote and border communities.
