India’s Current Nuclear Power Capacity

In 2012 , we have 20 nuclear reactors with a combined installed capacity of 4,780 MW — roughly 3% of our total electricity generation capacity. The government is planning to install several new reactors.

Seven nuclear power reactors with an installed capacity of 5,300 MW are currently in various stages of construction. It is expected that by 2017 India’s nuclear power capacity will reach 10,080 MW. Apart from this, India has also entered into fuel supply contracts with foreign countries.

The tariff of electricity generated by nuclear power per unit ranges from 94 paise in the case of the first nuclear power station (TAPS 1&2 at Tarapur in Maharashtra) to Rs 3.04 for the latest stations (KGS 3&4 at Kaiga in Karnataka).
