Indian soldiers of World War I to be honoured by UK

The United Kingdom (UK) will honour the Indian soldiers, who participated in World War-I (WW-I) as part of British India, through a series of events to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the conflict of World War I that was started in 1914.

  • Events will be organised in the UK, India and around the world and will see the participation of representatives from every country whose soldiers took part in the historic war. The tribute will include publication of regimental diaries.
  • To commemorate Indian involvement in the war that began in 1914, the British High Commission in India and the Delhi-based United Service Institute of India would hold events.

In the World War I, about 10-lakh Indian soldiers had fought on behalf of the British empire and over 70,000 Indian servicemen died.

About World War I (1914-1918)

A global war centred in Europe that began on 28 July 1914 and lasted until 11 November 1918. At the start of the war, these were the major players (more countries joined the war later):

  • Allied Forces (a.k.a. the Allies):France, the United Kingdom and Russia.
  • Central Powers:Germany and Austria-Hungary.

Result of the First World War

  • Allied victory.
  • End of the German, Russian, Ottoman, and Austro-Hungarian empires.
  • Formation of new countries in Europe and the Middle East.
  • Transfer of German colonies and regions of the former Ottoman Empire to other powers.
  • Establishment of the League of Nations.
