Indian-origin politician Keith Vaz named as Labour MP of the Year

Indian-origin British politician Keith Vaz was named as the Labour MP of the year 2014. He was choosen for this award for his valuable work for underrepresented, deprived and minority sections in the United Kingdom. Speaker of the house John Bercow announced the Patchwork Foundation MPs of the Year 2014 at Speakers House.
The awards were announced for those who have represented and worked with underrepresented, deprived and minority communities across the country.
The MP of the Year Awards not only highlights the work MPs are doing to better understand their diverse communities but also applauds those MP’s who are encouraging greater civic and political engagement.

About Keith Vaz

• His full name is Nigel Keith Anthony Standish Vaz, but popularly known as Keith Vaz
• He is a British Labour Party politician. He is Member of Parliament for Leicester East since 1987. He is the longest-serving Asian MP in United Kingdom and has been the Chairman of the Home Affairs Select Committee since July 2007.
• He was appointed as a member of the Privy Council in June 2006. He has also been named among the most influential Asians in Britain. Before his political career, Vaz was a practicing solicitor.
