Indian nurses return home through Special Air India flight
About a month long ordeal of 46 nurses, who were held captive by ISIS militants in Iraq, ended as they returned home by a special Air India flight. The suffering for these nurses who were working at a hospital in Saddam Hussein’s hometown of Tikrit, began when ISIS (Islamic State for Iraq and Syria) militants launched an offensive in that region on June 9, 2014.
The nurses were moved out against their will and detained in the militant-held city of Mosul. India’s External Affairs Ministry and other top Indian authorities were in constant touch with their counterparts in Iraq for the safe release of nurses. Finally, the efforts of Indian government fructified into their release and reunion with their families.
