Indian Navy’s Submersible Platform ‘Space’ Inaugurated

The Indian Navy inaugurated a state-of-the-art Submersible Platform for Acoustic Characterization and Evaluation (SPACE) in Kerala’s Idukki. This platform was set up by the Naval Physical & Oceanographic Laboratory of DRDO to serve as a premier testing and evaluation hub for sonar systems used by the Indian Navy on various platforms such as ships, submarines, and helicopters.

Components of SPACE Submersible

  • The SPACE consists of two main components: a platform that floats on the water surface and a submersible platform that can be lowered to depths up to 100 meters using winch systems.
  • The submersible platform can be easily winched up and docked with the floating platform after completing operations.

Capabilities of SPACE Submersible

  • SPACE will be primarily used for evaluating complete sonar systems, enabling quick deployment and easy recovery of scientific packages like sensors and transducers.
  • It will facilitate surveying, sampling, and data collection of various parameters related to air, surface, mid-water, and reservoir floors using advanced scientific instrumentation.
  • The platform will also support data processing and sample analyses in well-equipped scientific laboratories.

Significance of SPACE

  • The inauguration of SPACE marks a significant milestone in naval technology advancement for the Indian Navy.
  • This platform will enhance the Navy’s capabilities in Anti-Submarine Warfare research by providing a dedicated facility for testing and evaluating sonar systems.
  • Additionally, it will support the development of modern scientific instrumentation and data processing techniques for underwater acoustic research.
  • This state-of-the-art platform will enable the Navy to test and evaluate sonar systems with precision and efficiency, contributing to the modernization of naval technology and scientific instrumentation.
