Indian Navy to build MAAREECH, an advanced Torpedo Decoy System
On June 26, 2020, the Indian Navy inducted an advanced anti-torpedo decoy system called MAAREECH. The contract of production of the Maareech is to be undertaken by Bharat Electronics Limited.
Significance
The induction of the torpedo gives a major fillip to Make in India initiative. It will also help make the country self-reliant (Atma Nirbhar).
About Maareech
Maareech was designed and developed by DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organization). It is capable of detecting, locating and neutralizing incoming torpedos.
What is a Torpedo?
A torpedo is an underwater ranged weapon that can be launched above or below the surface of the water. It is an explosive warhead designed to detonate either in contact with the target or in proximity to the target.
Torpedos in Indian Navy
Takshak is the Torpedo of Indian Navy that is under development. Varunastra is the recently developed Torpedo of Indian Navy. It was inducted in the Navy in 2016. The contract of manufacturing Varunastra was provided to Bharat Dynamics Limited.
