Indian Navy Receives INS Imphal
Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) has delivered INS Imphal, the third ship of the Project 15B Class of stealth guided missile destroyers, to the Indian Navy, four months ahead of schedule.
Early Delivery and Accommodation for Women Officers and Sailors
- INS Imphal was delivered to the Indian Navy ahead of schedule, showcasing MDL’s commitment to continuous improvement.
- It’s the first naval warship with accommodations for women officers and sailors.
- The ship can accommodate a crew of 312 persons, has a range of 4,000 nautical miles, and can carry out a 42-day mission with extended mission time.
- It is equipped with two helicopters onboard to extend its operational capabilities.
Specifications of INS Imphal
- INS Imphal is constructed using indigenous steel “DMR 249A” and is one of the largest destroyers built in India.
- It has an overall length of 164 meters and a displacement of over 7,500 tonnes.
- The ship is armed with supersonic Surface-to-Surface Brahmos missiles, Barak-8 Medium Range Surface-to-Air missiles, anti-submarine weapons and sensors, including the hull-mounted Sonar Humsa NG, heavyweight torpedo tube launchers, and ASW rocket launchers.
- It is propelled by a powerful Combined Gas and Gas Propulsion Plant (COGAG), enabling it to achieve speeds of over 30 knots (approximately 55 kmph).
- The ship features a high level of automation with advanced digital networks, including Gigabyte Ethernet-based Ship Data Network (GESDN), Combat Management System (CMS), Automatic Power Management System (APMS), and Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS).
- The indigenous content in P15B-Class destroyers is 72%, reflecting India’s focus on the Atmanirbhar Bharat program and the development of a robust ecosystem of sub-vendors.
Versatility and Capability
- INS Imphal is a versatile platform capable of various maritime warfare tasks, including anti-submarine warfare, surface combat, anti-ship missile defense, and air defense.
- It can operate independently without the need for supporting vessels and can also serve as the flagship of a Naval Task Force.
Future Upgrades
- INS Imphal will be the first among all P15B ships to be fitted with upgraded Brahmos missiles, providing dual-role capability for long-range and land attack missions.
Project 15B Class Timeline
- The first ship of the P15B Class, INS Visakhapatnam, was commissioned on November 21, 2021.
- The second ship, INS Mormugao, was commissioned on December 18, 2022.
- The fourth ship, INS Surat, was launched on May 17 last year and is at an advanced stage of outfitting.
