Indian Navy gets another P-8I Maritime Patrol Aircraft from Boeing

Screenshot_3The US aircraft manufacturer Boeing has delivered the second P-8I aircraft to Indian Navy. With the help of this aircraft Indian Navy’s long-range maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare capabilities is likely to get a boost. Boeing, which is manufacturing eight P-8I aircrafts for India, delivered the first one in May 2013.

P-8I Aircraft:
  • It’s a variant of the P-8A Poseidon possessed by the US Navy
  • Manufactured by US based company Boeing
  • Long-range, multimission maritime patrol aircraft
  • To replace the ageing fleet of Tupolev Tu-142 aircraft in the Indian Navy.
  • Designed to protect the vast coastline and territorial waters of India.
  • Can conduct Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), Anti-Surface Warfare (AsuW), intelligence, maritime patrol, surveillance and reconnaissance missions.
  • Design is based on the Boeing Next Generation 737-800 aircraft.
  • Equipped with a CAE AN/ASQ-508A magnetic anomaly detection (MAD) system, APS-143C(V)3 multimode radar and a global version of the Raytheon APY-10 surveillance radar.
  • The APY-10 radar provides precise information in all weather, day and night missions.
  • BEL Data Link II communications system, Avantel mobile satellite system and a speech secrecy system from Electronics Corporation of India (ECIL).
  • Can be loaded with Mark 54 torpedoes, depth charges, free-fall bombs.
  • Can be equipped with Harpoon Block II anti-ship missiles which can be fired against land and sea targets.
