Indian Navy- ISRO MoU for Satellite based Naval Applications

On August 5, 2022, Indian Navy inked a MoU with ISRO’s Space Applications Centre, Ahmedabad for data sharing and cooperation on Satellite based Naval Applications in Meteorology and Oceanology.

Through this MoU;

  • Both the organisations will get a common platform of mutual cooperation, where scientific advancements by Space Applications Centre would be synergised into Indian Naval efforts.
  • This move will help to keep India’s defence in line with rapid development in Satellite Data retrieval and applications and will strengthen the collaboration.
  • It will also further the meaningful interactions and professional exchanges between both the organisations in future.
  • MoU is the extension of last MoU signed in 2017.

Major areas of cooperation include;

  • Sharing of non-confidential observational data
  • Operation exploitation weather products generated by SAC
  • Provisioning of Subject Matter Experts (SME) in processing the satellite data for development of new tools
  • Calibration and validation of ocean models.

Space Applications Centre (SAC)

SAC is an institution of research under the parent head of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). It was founded by Dr. Vikram Sarabhai. The institution engages in research, development and demonstration of applications related to space technology in the field of remote sensing, telecommunications, satellite navigation and meteorology. SAC has three campuses, 1 at Delhi and 2 at Ahmedabad. The institution provides infrastructure to the students of ‘Centre for Space Science & Technology Education in Asia and the Pacific (CSSTEAP), for conducting training courses.
