Indian Army observes “No Movement”; Special train to ferry soldiers
On April 16, 2020, the Indian Army chief Lt General Manoj Naravane issued directives to all the military cantonments, headquarters, establishments to strictly ensure no movement of forces till April 19, 2020. This is being done to fight COVID-19 during extended lock down.
Highlights
The army headquarters are to function with 50% man power. The training and temporary duties are to remain suspended till May 3, 2020. Also, sports, social, academic, religious and cultural gatherings are to remain suspended.
The offices in hotspots are to observe “No Movement” to indefinite period. No date has been issued for these areas. Around 170 hotspots have been identified by the Government. These are the areas where the growth rate of the infection and its spread is increasing day by day.
Special Train
The Indian Army is to ferry special trains to move soldiers to northern and eastern borders. This is being done to bring back officers who were on leave. According to army sources, around 20-25% of army personnel were on leave. The total strength of the Indian Army is 13 lakhs.
