India-U.S. HADR Exercise Tiger Triumph

The fourth iteration of the India-U.S. tri-service Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) Exercise, known as Tiger Triumph, is set to take place from 1 to 13 April 2025. This exercise aims to strengthen cooperation and coordination between the Indian and U.S. armed forces in disaster response scenarios.

Objectives

  • The primary goal of Tiger Triumph is to enhance interoperability in conducting HADR operations.
  • It focuses on developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for establishing a Combined Coordination Centre (CCC).
  • This centre will facilitate effective collaboration between Indian and U.S. Joint Task Forces (JTF) during various operations.

Participating Forces

The Indian contingent will include several naval and air assets. Key participants are the Indian Naval Ships Jalashwa, Gharial, Mumbai, and Shakti. The Indian Army will contribute troops from the 91 Infantry Brigade and the 12 Mechanised Infantry Battalion. Air support will come from a C-130 transport aircraft and MI-17 helicopters. The U.S. side will be represented by the USS Comstock and USS Ralph Johnson, along with troops from the U.S. Marine Corps Forces (Pacific).

Harbour Phase Activities

The Harbour Phase will occur in Visakhapatnam from 1 to 7 April. This phase will kick off with an opening ceremony featuring a joint flag parade and media interactions on board INS Jalashwa. During this week, participants will engage in training visits, subject matter expert exchanges, sports events, and social interactions to build camaraderie and understanding.

Sea Phase Operations

Following the Harbour Phase, the exercise will transition to a Sea Phase. Ships will conduct Maritime, Amphibious, and HADR operations off the coast of Kakinada. A joint command and control centre will be established at the Kakinada naval enclave, allowing for streamlined coordination between the Indian Army and U.S. Marines.

Medical Support Initiatives

An aspect of the exercise is the establishment of a joint medical camp. The Indian Air Force’s Rapid Action Medical Team (RAMT) will collaborate with the U.S. Navy medical team to provide medical aid during the exercise. This initiative puts stress on the humanitarian focus of Tiger Triumph.
