India to build 43,000 housing units for dislocated Tamils in Sri Lanka

  • India will build 43,000 housing units for resettlement and rehabilitation of the war affected and dislocated Tamils in Sri Lanka’s former troubled areas in the northern and eastern provinces, as part of a $ 270 million project. A pilot project has already been implemented with the construction of 1,000 houses in Jaffna, Killinochchi and 3 other districts of the Northern Province.
  • The High Commission of India inked pact with four implementing agencies that will supervise the implementation of the next phase of the Indian Housing Project for 43,000 housing units.
  • The construction is part of the India’s overall commitment to build 50,000 houses, which was promised by the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during the State visit of the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa to India in June 2010.
  • It is one of the biggest overseas projects being implemented by India under the full grant assistance with a total expend of approx $ 270 million.
