India-Tanzania Defence Cooperation

During the recent visit of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to Tanzania, significant developments took place in the defence cooperation between India and Tanzania. These engagements highlight India’s commitment to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s doctrine of SAGAR (Security and Growth for all in the Region).  

INS Trishul’s Visit and Joint EEZ Surveillance 

As part of the visit, the guided missile frigate INS Trishul visited the ports of Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. Notably, INS Trishul conducted India’s first-ever Joint Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) surveillance with the Tanzanian Navy. This joint surveillance strengthens maritime security and cooperation between the two countries. 

India-Mozambique-Tanzania Trilateral Exercise 

Last year witnessed the inaugural edition of the India-Mozambique-Tanzania Trilateral Exercise (IMT TRILAT). This joint maritime exercise involved India, Mozambique, and Tanzania. The Indian Navy actively participated in the exercise with INS Tarkash, a Chetak helicopter, and MARCOS (Special forces). Such trilateral exercises enhance interoperability and cooperation among the naval forces. 

Growing Defence Cooperation 

The defence cooperation between India and Tanzania has been expanding steadily. Tanzania has emerged as a critical partner in India’s defence outreach and Indo-Pacific Policy. This growing partnership signifies the deepening bond between the two nations. 

High-level Visits 

Defence Ministers of Tanzania have visited India twice in the last year. Dr. Stergomena Tax’s visit included meetings with Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh and visits to various units of Indian defence companies. Defence Minister Innocent Bashungwa attended the Aero India show in Bengaluru during his second visit in 2023. These visits aim to enhance mutual understanding and explore opportunities for collaboration. 

Second Edition of JDCC 

The second edition of the Joint Defence Cooperation Committee (JDCC) between India and Tanzania concluded in Arusha, Tanzania. The discussions resulted in a comprehensive five-year roadmap for defence cooperation. This roadmap covers various initiatives, including customised training, capacity building, maritime cooperation, infrastructure building, and collaboration in defence equipment and technology. 

Future Prospects 

The defence cooperation between India and Tanzania is expected to grow from strength to strength in the coming years. Given Tanzania’s strategic location in the Indian Ocean Region and its historical relationship with India, this partnership holds significant potential for mutual benefit and regional security.
