India-South Korea hold meeting to enhance Bilateral Security Cooperation

On January 4, 2020, the defence ministers of India and South Korea discussed ways to enhance bilateral security cooperation in the field of defence industries and research and development.

Highlights

During the defence ministers meet held between India and South Korea, several possible areas of cooperation in the field of defence industry were listed. The countries also discussed about investment in Defence Industrial Corridors in Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.

Defence Industrial Corridors

The Government of India has set up Defence Industrial Corridor in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The Corridors facilitate efficient industrial base and aims at increasing defence production in the country. They aim at ensuring connectivity between different defence industrial units.

The Uttar Pradesh Defence Corridor aims to connect six cities namely Kanpur, Lucknow, Agra, Chitrakoot, Jhansi and Aligarh. Tamil Nadu Defence Corridor includes five cities namely Hosur, Salem, Chennai, Trichy and Coimbatore.

Significance

It is essential for India to maintain cordial relations with South Korea for its strategic location in China Sea. Also, India is currently developing strong military hardware cooperation with South Korea. Indian Army has inducted K-9 Vajra howitzers that has roots in South Korea. K9 is currently deployed in the border of Pakistan.
