India Shines at 2024 Asia-Pacific Deaf Games

India achieved remarkable success at the 2024 Asia-Pacific Deaf Games held in Kuala Lumpur. The Indian team returned home with an impressive total of 55 medals, improving from their previous performance in 2015.

Team Composition and Performance

The Indian contingent comprised 68 athletes, including 42 men and 26 women. They participated in seven sports and secured 8 gold, 18 silver, and 29 bronze medals. This achievement marked India’s best performance in the tournament’s history since its inception in 1984.

Medal Breakdown by Sport

The medals were distributed across various sports.

  • Athletics brought in the highest tally with 28 medals – 5 gold, 12 silver, and 11 bronze.
  • Badminton contributed 6 medals, including 3 silver and 3 bronze.
  • Chess added 3 medals, while judo and table tennis secured 7 and 3 medals, respectively.
  • Wrestling also performed well, with 8 medals, including 1 gold.

Several athletes stood out during the games.

  • Priyanga Paramaraj excelled in athletics, contributing to both gold and silver medals.
  • Ridham Sharma won gold in relay events and silver in the 400-meter hurdles.
  • Vinith Mani secured gold in the 400-meter event.

Union Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya praised the team’s achievements and brought into light the government’s commitment to enhancing sports infrastructure and coaching. He expressed optimism about India’s future in sports, emphasising the importance of national pride in athletic success.
