India provides over 30 Thousand Vaccines to the Maldives

On Thursday, 23rd January 2020, More than thirty thousand doses of Measles and Rubella (MR) vaccines were handed over to the Maldives by India to tackle the recent outbreak of Measles at a government-run hospital in the island country of South Asia.

Maldives was declared measles free by the World Health Organization (WHO) less than three years back. However, the government in Male suspected an outbreak of the disease after six persons were detected with the contagious viral infection. The country made an emergency request to India, for the vaccines, which was handed over within three days of the request. Maldives had earlier approached Denmark and UNICEF for the vaccines. It is also said that four people of Maldives tested positive for the disease in the past week. The doses were handed over to Abdulla Ameen (Maldivian Health Minister) by the Indian Embassy. On the island of Hulhumale, India is helping the Maldives government in building a 100-bed cancer hospital under the USD 800 million Line of Credit sanctioned by the Indian Government to the island nation.
