India- Maldives Renewable Energy Transfer Project
India and Maldives have agreed to set up a transmission interconnection for the purpose of transferring renewable power between both countries. This proposal was discussed during the meeting that was held between R K Singh, India’s Power and New and Renewable Energy Minister, and Aminath Shauna, Maldives’ Environment, Climate Change, and Technology Minister.
Overview:
- The Maldives government’s resolve to achieve a net-zero emission target by the year 2030 was discussed.
- Two Memoranda of Understandings (MoUs) were proposed during the meeting that was on the transmission interconnection under the One Sun, One World, One Grid (OSOWOG) and the other one was on energy cooperation.
Energy transition programme
A transmission interconnection for the purpose of renewable power transfer has been proposed to facilitate the Maldives’ energy transition programme. A draft agreement is currently being prepared for the MoU that will be signed on transmission interconnection. Under this MoU, an Indian technical team will be visiting the Maldives to assess the project’s technical feasibility. Also, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared jointly with agencies from India and Maldives that will include a network augmentation in Male and a survey will be conducted for undersea cable route.
