4th India-Malaysia Joint Military Exercise: HARIMAU SHAKTI-2024

The 4th India-Malaysia Joint Military Exercise, HARIMAU SHAKTI, has begun at Bentong Camp in Malaysia’s Pahang district and will continue until December 15, 2024.

Participants

India is represented by 78 personnel from the MAHAR Regiment. Malaysia has 123 personnel from the Royal Malaysian Regiment. Both countries contribute military resources to the exercise.

The primary aim is to enhance joint operational capabilities, which focus is on counter-insurgency operations in jungle environments. This aligns with the United Nations Mandate for peacekeeping and stability.

History

HARIMAU SHAKTI is an annual exercise. It alternates locations between India and Malaysia. The previous year’s exercise occurred at Umroi Cantonment in Meghalaya, India.

Phases of the Exercise

The exercise consists of two main phases. The first phase focuses on cross-training, which includes lectures, demonstrations, and practice drills. These activities occur in jungle terrain to simulate real conditions. The second phase involves a simulated operation. Both armies will engage in tactics such as ambushes and reconnaissance patrols. They will also practice attacking terrorist-occupied areas.
