India’s First Diabetes Biobank in Chennai

India has taken a step forward in diabetes research with the establishment of its first diabetes biobank in Chennai, spearheaded by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in collaboration with the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF), aims to enhance scientific understanding of diabetes and its variations in the Indian population.

Purpose of the Biobank

The primary objective of the biobank is to collect, process, store, and share biological samples, will facilitate research into the causes of diabetes and related health issues. Researchers will require approval from ICMR to access the samples for their studies.

Sample Collection and Storage

Currently, the biobank houses blood samples from two major ICMR-funded studies. The first is the ICMR-INDIAB study, which took place across all states of India and Union territories from 2008 to 2020. The second study focuses on a registry of young individuals diagnosed with diabetes, initiated in 2006.

Types of Diabetes Covered

The biobank is particularly focused on storing samples from various types of diabetes affecting young people. This includes Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes. Such a diverse collection will enable comprehensive research into the different manifestations of diabetes.

Timeline of Establishment

The groundwork for the biobank commenced approximately two years ago. The collaborative efforts between ICMR and MDRF have culminated in the successful launch of this facility, which is expected to contribute to diabetes research in India.

Researchers will benefit from access to a well-curated collection of biological samples. This will enable them to explore the genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors influencing diabetes prevalence and outcomes in the Indian demographic.
