India Launches First AI Lab in Space
TakeMe2Space, a Hyderabad-based company, will launch MOI-TD, which represents India’s first AI lab in space. The launch is scheduled for mid-December 2024, which will use ISRO’s PSLV C60 rocket and aims to make space research more affordable and accessible.
Objectives of MOI-TD
MOI-TD aims to demonstrate real-time data processing in orbit, which addresses challenges in satellite operations. Satellites generate vast amounts of data daily. Much of this data becomes unusable due to factors like cloud cover. Processing data on Earth incurs time and costs. MOI-TD will reduce transmission costs and delays by processing data in space.
Support and Development
The development of MOI-TD received support from IN-SPACe. This government agency promotes private space initiatives. It provided advanced facilities at its Technical Centre in Ahmedabad. This collaboration enhances the mission’s capabilities.
User Interaction via OrbitLab
Users can interact with MOI-TD through OrbitLab, which allows users to upload AI models. Applications include environmental monitoring and tracking deforestation. Users can also observe maritime activity and detect greenhouse gas emissions. The platform has attracted partners, including a Malaysian university and Indian school students.
Advanced Satellite Features
MOI-TD includes advanced technologies, features AI accelerators and onboard computing. Reaction wheels and magnetorquers enhance satellite control. Flexible solar cells could power future satellites. The satellite builds on successful radiation shielding technology tested in previous missions.
While focused on Earth observation, MOI-TD sets the stage for space-based computing. This concept resembles cloud services on Earth. Current systems are more expensive than Earth-based options. However, they promise long-term savings and environmental benefits. The mission is step towards establishing data centres in space. It expands opportunities for innovation in space exploration.
