Gujarat, Maharastra and UP Top Rooftop Solar Installation under PM Surya Ghar Scheme
The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana was launched on February 15, 2024, and aims to provide rooftop solar power to one crore households by March 2027. The initiative is set to become the world’s largest domestic rooftop solar program.
Target Installations
The scheme has specific targets for installations with over 10 lakh installations expected by March 2025. The goal is to achieve 20 lakh by October 2025 and 40 lakh by March 2026.
Current Progress
On December 9, 2024, there have been over 6.79 lakh installations completed. Gujarat leads with more than 3.02 lakh installations. Maharashtra follows with over 1.39 lakh, and Uttar Pradesh has over 56,000 installations. Six states account for approximately 88% of total installations.
The scheme offers substantial financial assistance. Households can receive up to 40% subsidy on installation costs. Low-interest loans are also available at about 7% for rooftop solar systems up to 3 kW capacity.
Environmental Impact
The PM Surya Ghar Yojana aims to add 30 GW of solar capacity. This expansion will help India achieve its renewable energy objectives. The initiative is projected to save ₹75,000 crore annually in electricity costs. It is expected to generate 1,000 billion units of electricity over 25 years.
The programme is anticipated to reduce CO2 emissions. It is projected to cut emissions by 720 million tonnes. This reduction will contribute positively to the environment and combat climate change.
