India in top five list of Drug Seizures

The recently released World Drug Report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime reports that the fourth largest drug seizures in 2018 was from India.

Highlights

Iran had the world’s highest seizure of opium followed by Afghanistan and Pakistan. The report stated that 644 tonnes of opium was seized in Iran, 27 tonnes in Afghanistan and 19 tonnes in Pakistan. In India, the seizure was four tonnes.

Heroin

The report says that Iran had the highest heroin seizures followed by Turkey, US, China, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Around 25 tonnes of heroin were seized in Iran. India was at 12th position in terms of Heroin.

Key Findings of the report

Around 84% of the world opium is produced in Afghanistan. Afghanistan is located in the golden crescent of the opium trade. From the golden triangle of opium trade, Myanmar accounts to 7% of opium production and Laos accounts to 1%.

The global area under poppy cultivation declined as compared to previous year. The cultivation reduced by 17% in 2018 and 30% in 2019.
