India for Humanity-Jaipur Foot event was recently organised at United States Capitol building to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. It was jointly by Indian Embassy and Jaipur Foot USA.
About India for Humanity initiative
It was launched by Union Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in October 2018 to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and honour of his service to humanity. Under it, artificial limb fitment camps are held across different countries identified through missions with financial support of Central government (MEA).
Objective: To provide physical, socio-economic rehabilitation of differently-abled around world by helping them regain their mobility and dignity to become self-respecting and productive members of society. It is based Father of Nation-Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy of compassion, caring and service to humanity.
Implementation: For this initiative, MEA has collaborated with renowned charitable organisation Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS), the parent body of Jaipur Foot. So far, BMVSS has conducted 78 camps in 33 countries under this programme, with the sanctions of the Government of India, fitting total of 5152 limbs in these camps.
About Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS)
It is non-profit organization founded by Devendra Raj Mehta in 1975. It famously known by its trademark limb ‘Jaipur Foot’. It is world’s largest non-profit organization for handicapped in terms of fitment of artificial limb, calipers etc and providing ambulatory aids like wheel chairs, and other aids and appliances totally free of cost without any geographical, gender or community bias. It has served more than 1.8 million amputees in India and other parts of the world.
