India declared open defecation free by PM Modi
On the eve of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary, PM Modi declared India Open Defecation Free. The PM said in 60 months 600 million people have been given access to toilets and more than 110 million toilets have been built.
On October 2, 2014, Clean India campaign was launched by PM Modi with the aim of making India Open Defecation Free by 2019. Open Defecation Free was the main objective of the Clean India Campaign. The other objectives of the campaign include clean streets, building solid waste management plants, door – door waste collection and adopt better sanitation practices.
About Open Defecation
Open Defecation is the process where people defecate in forests, open bodies of water, bushes or other open spaces. According to World Bank, more than 300 million Indians were still defecating in the open till 2017.
PM said 99% of rural India has become ODF. The concerns that stand in the way of eradicating the practice completely are lack of water and poor maintenance.
