India-Chile Relations
Chile was the first country in South America which signed a trade agreement with India in 1956. The first high level visit from India was of Mrs. Indira Gandhi during 1968.
As part of India’s commitment to promoting South-South cooperation, India has been participating in capacity building and development partnership initiatives with Latin America. Under the Programme of “Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation”, scholarships are being extended to Chilean nationals for pursuing short-term training courses in various disciplines. The rationale for such cooperation is also reinforced by the common challenges both our countries face, despite our varying cultures and backgrounds.
The bilateral trade between India and Chile was USD 2,100.19 million at the end of March 2011.

As a follow up to the Framework Agreement, a PTA was finalized after four rounds of negotiations between the two sides on 8th March 2006.
