India attends WATEC Conference in Israel
The Jal Shakti Minister Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat represented India at the WATEC Conference that was held in Israel. The Water Technology and Environment Control (WATEC) conference helps to get updates on technologies related to water and environmental management. Several countries participated in the conference showcasing their revolutionary technologies and solutions.
Significance
Israel is considered as world hero in terms of water management. The country treats and reuses 80% of its sewage water for agriculture. Today Israel’s water demand outstrips its unconventional water resources. With drip irrigation and sea water desalination, the country has become a global leader in agriculture. Attending such conferences will help India learn technologies to conserve water and replicate.
Need
Today Agriculture sector consumes nearly 89% of water resources according to the “Dynamic Ground Water Resources” of India report. The report also says that saving 10% of water will increase water availability by 50 years. It is essential for India to act upon quickly as the groundwater resources are depleting at faster rate.
The water stressed states in India are Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Punjab and Haryana.
