India assisted projects in Mauritius

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently launched series of projects in Mauritius. India is to assist the neighbour in implementing these projects. The projects were launched virtually by PM Modi and his Mauritian counterpart Pravind Jugnauth.

About the Projects

  • Civil Service College
  • 8 MW Solar Photo Voltaic Farm. This was launched on the side lines of the COP26 meet held in Glasgow in 2021. Through this project India is to show the world how cooperation in solar energy between the countries is beneficial. The project will reduce carbon foot prints and energy costs. The base of international cooperation in solar energy lies with the International Solar Alliance launched in 2018.
  • The countries signed a Memorandum of understanding to implement Small Development Projects

Metro Express Project

India is to assist Mauritius in implementing the Metro Express Project. For this India has extended a line of credit of 190 million USD. In order to honour India for its financial assistance in implementing the project, Mauritius Government is to name one of the stations after “Mahatma Gandhi”.

The metro project was inaugurated by India along with Supreme Court building and ENT hospital. Today the metro transits 5.6 million passengers on daily basis. The line of credit will be used to extend the metro line.

Background

India and Mauritius are united together in culture, maritime, ancestry, language. Mauritius was one of the first countries to receive vaccine from India under the Maitri programme. Today more than three – fourths of the population of Mauritius is vaccinated.

Social Housing Project

India assisted Mauritius in constructing affordable housing. The project has now been completed successfully.  The project is a proof that Indian projects in the foreign countries are increasing and improving radically.

Way Forward

India and Mauritius are to implement the following projects in the future:

  • Mauritius Police Academy
  • National Library and Archives
  • Forensic Science Laboratory
  • Renal Transplant Unit
