India and UK discuss Green Energy collaboration
Union Minister of Science & Technology, Dr Jitendra Singh held an online meeting with the Science Minister of United Kingdom, George Freeman on November 25, 2021.
Highlights
- In the meeting, the two ministers discussed Green Energy collaboration between both the countries among other issues.
- India-UK Science & Technology (S&T) collaboration has been growing rapidly, while the joint research programme of both the countries has gone from zero base to 300-400 million pounds now.
- According to Indian Minister, UK has emerged as the second largest international research & innovation partner of India.
India’s net zero journey
On the issue of India’s net zero journey, minister highlighted that, energy efficiency & renewable energy are central pillars, where India is leading by various initiatives including Clean Energy Mission, India Solar Alliance etc.
India-UK Collaboration in clean & green energy
Dwelling on India-UK collaboration in clean and green energy, Indian Minister noted that, following four technology value chains contribute for half of the cumulative CO2 savings:
- Technologies to widely electrify end-use sectors (like advanced batteries),
- Carbon capture, Utilisation and storage (CCUS)
- Hydrogen and hydrogen-related fuels
- Bioenergy
India-UK S & T partnership covers all aspect of research & innovation ranging from discovery to development to translation which is essential for both the country to rise to new heights.
Newton Bhabha MoU
The Newton Bhabha MoU helped India and UK to take their S&T cooperation to the next level across several research areas like energy security, water, health, food & agriculture, climate change, environmental studies and social & cultural changes.
