India and Japan Strengthen Defence Cooperation

India and Japan are enhancing their defence collaboration, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh recently concluded a visit to Laos. This visit included meetings with Japanese and Philippine counterparts during the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus).

Key Discussions

The discussions focused on military cooperation, which explored a potential agreement for sharing supplies and services. This agreement aims to improve coordination between their armed forces. It would allow the use of each other’s bases for repairs and supplies.

Military Exercises and Equipment Development

Both ministers talked about conducting joint military exercises. They also discussed collaboration in developing defence equipment. This includes co-developing technologies crucial for military operations.

UNICORN Project

A important agreement was reached regarding the UNICORN project. This project involves the co-development of the Unified Complex Radio Antenna mast. This technology enhances stealth capabilities in warships.

Air Defence Cooperation

India and Japan agreed to strengthen cooperation in air defence, which aim to enhance their capabilities in this critical area. This partnership is essential for regional security.

Bilateral Talks with the Philippines

In a separate meeting, Singh met with Philippines Defence Minister Gilberto Teodoro. They decided to deepen ties in various sectors. These include defence industries, counter-terrorism, space, and maritime security.

ADMM-Plus Forum Overview

The ADMM-Plus forum includes 10 ASEAN member nations and eight dialogue partners. This includes India, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, and the United States. The forum aims to strengthen regional defence partnerships.

Before returning to India, Singh visited the Wat Sisakat temple in Vientiane. He received blessings from the temple’s Abbot. This visit marks the cultural ties alongside defence cooperation.
