India and Italy Forge Strategic Partnership 2025-29

India and Italy have formalised a collaboration plan for the next five years, which was made during the G20 summit in Brazil on November 18. Prime Ministers Modi and Meloni discussed various sectors, including defence and technology.

Defence Collaboration

India and Italy aim to negotiate a defence plan, which will involve cooperation between their defence ministries. They will also work with defence industry organisations. The sharing of classified information will be secured. Military exchanges have increased, brought into light by a naval exercise in October.

Maritime Cooperation

The two nations will enhance maritime cooperation, which will address pollution at sea. Joint search and rescue missions will also be conducted. This partnership aims to improve safety and environmental protection in maritime operations.

Economic Partnerships

India and Italy will collaborate on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC). They will explore industrial partnerships in sectors like automotive and semiconductors. Infrastructure and manufacturing will also be key areas of focus.

Technological Advancements

The countries plan to strengthen ties in technology. They will engage in co-production and co-development of defence equipment. This collaboration aims to boost innovation and efficiency in both nations.

Space Cooperation

India’s ISRO and Italy’s Space Agency (ASI) will deepen their cooperation. They will focus on Earth observation and heliophysics. Lunar exploration is also on the agenda, enhancing scientific collaboration.

Migration and Workforce Development

The two countries will support legal migration of skilled workers. There will be a focus on training health professionals in India for employment in Italy. Efforts will also address issues related to illegal migration.
