India and France Collaborate on New National Museum

India and France have formalized an agreement to establish a new National Museum in New Delhi, named Yuga Yugeen Bharat, signed on December 19, 2024, which is set to transform the historic North and South Block buildings into the world’s largest museum.

Signatories and Significance

The agreement was signed by Herve Barbaret, Director General of France Museums, and B.R. Mani, Director General of India’s National Museum. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized that this project represents robust international cooperation and cultural collaboration. He labeled it a very important step in reimagining India’s heritage while reinforcing ties between India and France.

India and France maintain a strategic partnership, which plays an important role in a multipolar world. The collaboration aims to enhance mutual understanding and cultural exchange, which are vital for both nations’ growth and stability.

Adaptive Reuse Concept

Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat brought into light the concept of “adaptive reuse.” This approach focuses on preserving the architectural heritage of the North and South Block buildings while transforming them into dynamic cultural spaces. The project aims to inspire other nations regarding heritage preservation and adaptive reuse.

French Expertise

The project will leverage France’s renowned expertise in transforming iconic structures into cultural landmarks, as seen with the Louvre and the Grand Palais. This collaboration builds upon previous agreements signed in 2020 and 2023, which laid the groundwork for technical cooperation and museum planning.

Under the Memorandum of About (MoU), France Museums Development will assist with studies, planning, and design for the new museum. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is anticipated to visit France in February 2025, which will further tell the growing collaboration between the two countries, particularly in the fields of artificial intelligence and cultural innovation.
